The poster usually main dark colours which is usually associated with males. The gore displayed throughout film also suggests its targeted at males as gore is typically associated with males. The main character of the film is female and there are some sexual scenes which supports the idea of the film being targeted at males. The director, Zack Synder, also directed films such as 300 (2006), Watchmen (2009) and Man of Steel (2013). These films are typically male because of the genres, action and gore they display. This is his first horror however 'Dawn of the Dead' and '300' are very gory and bloody films, which is expected from a male orientated film. The film is slightly different to the typical codes and conventions. The female is the main character and starts off as the damsel, however throughout the film she slowly grows a more masculine role within the group. However, the ending see's all the characters die after believing they were safe which was a real plot twist which would draw the explores and strugglers.
